James Foley (bishop)

James Foley (May 26, 1913 – April 7, 1995) was an Australian Roman Catholic prelate. He served as the third Bishop of Cairns from 1967 to 1992.

Born in Brisbane, Queensland, Foley was ordained a priest in 1936. He served in various parishes throughout Queensland before being appointed Bishop of Cairns on June 23, 1967. He was consecrated on August 23, 1967, and formally installed as Bishop on August 27, 1967.

During his time as Bishop of Cairns, Foley focused on developing pastoral care programs and promoting Catholic education within the diocese. He oversaw the expansion of Catholic schools and played a role in fostering ecumenical relationships with other Christian denominations in the region.

Foley retired as Bishop of Cairns on July 3, 1992, and was succeeded by Bishop John Bathersby. He remained active in the diocese until his death in 1995.
