James Craven (American actor)

James Craven (March 2, 1894 – July 19, 1955) was an American actor. He appeared in nearly 200 films and television episodes throughout his career, often portraying authority figures such as doctors, lawyers, judges, and police officers.

Born in New York City, Craven began his acting career on the stage before transitioning to film in the 1930s. He was a prolific character actor, known for his reliable performances in a wide range of genres, including crime dramas, comedies, and westerns. While rarely in leading roles, he contributed significantly to the supporting casts of many well-known movies.

Some of his notable film credits include The Little Foxes (1941), The Pride of the Yankees (1942), The Seventh Cross (1944), Mildred Pierce (1945), The Asphalt Jungle (1950), and Rebel Without a Cause (1955). He also appeared in numerous serials and shorts.

In addition to his film work, Craven also appeared in television programs during the early years of the medium. His television credits include appearances in anthology series such as Studio One, Lux Video Theatre, and The Ford Television Theatre.
