Jakob Jež

Jakob Jež (born August 12, 1928, died December 26, 2016) was a Slovenian composer and professor of music. He is recognized as a prominent figure in Slovenian contemporary classical music, known for his diverse output encompassing orchestral works, chamber music, choral pieces, and vocal compositions.

Jež studied composition at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana under Lucijan Marija Škerjanc. He subsequently pursued further studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. His compositional style evolved over time, initially influenced by neoclassicism before embracing serialism and other avant-garde techniques. Later in his career, he incorporated elements of Slovenian folk music into his works.

Jež taught composition and music theory at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana for many years, influencing generations of Slovenian composers. He received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to Slovenian musical culture, solidifying his position as a significant figure in the nation's artistic heritage. His notable compositions include the opera Mati (Mother), various orchestral concertos, and numerous works for choir.
