JDS Kuroshio (SS-570)

The JDS Kuroshio (SS-570) was the lead boat of the Kuroshio-class submarine of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). She was commissioned in 1954 and decommissioned in 1968. Built in Japan with technology transferred from the United States, she represented one of the first domestically produced submarines for the postwar JMSDF. The Kuroshio-class was based on the U.S. Navy's Balao-class submarine design and played a vital role in the development of Japan's submarine warfare capabilities. Her primary purpose was anti-submarine warfare (ASW). The Kuroshio (SS-570) served as a training platform and contributed significantly to the JMSDF's early efforts to re-establish a modern and effective submarine force.
