J. R. Reed (gridiron football, born 1996)
J. R. Reed (born September 25, 1996) is an American football safety who is currently a free agent. He played college football at the University of Georgia.
Reed is the son of former NFL wide receiver Jake Reed. He attended Prestonwood Christian School in Plano, Texas, where he played high school football. He initially committed to Tulsa, but later transferred to Georgia after a year at Coffeyville Community College.
At Georgia, Reed was a two-time All-SEC selection. He was a key part of the Bulldogs' defense that reached the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in 2018. In 2019, he was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's best defensive back.
Reed entered the 2020 NFL Draft but was not selected. He subsequently signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent. He has also spent time with the Los Angeles Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While he has been on active rosters, he has primarily been a practice squad player throughout his professional career, contributing mainly on special teams.
