Tabiauea
Tabiauea is an atoll located in the Gilbert Islands group, which forms part of the Republic of Kiribati. It is situated in the central Pacific Ocean. The atoll is characterized by its lagoon which is almost completely enclosed by land. The main islands are located on the eastern side of the atoll, with a long, narrow island stretching along the southern rim.
The inhabitants of Tabiauea primarily engage in subsistence farming and fishing. Copra production, derived from coconuts, is also a significant economic activity, though susceptible to fluctuations in world market prices.
The atoll has a history of migrations and settlements, reflecting the broader movements of people throughout the Pacific. The traditional social structure is based on kinship and clan systems.
Tabiauea, like other low-lying atoll nations, faces significant challenges related to climate change, including rising sea levels and coastal erosion, threatening both infrastructure and the livelihoods of its residents.
