Babes in Toyland (1986 film)
Babes in Toyland is a 1986 American made-for-television musical film directed by Clive Donner. It is a remake of the classic operetta Babes in Toyland by Victor Herbert and Glen MacDonough.
The film stars Drew Barrymore as Lisa Piper, a young girl transported to Toyland in a dream. There, she encounters familiar fairytale characters like Mother Goose (played by Pat Morita), Mary Quite Contrary (Eileen Brennan), Jack Be Nimble (Keanu Reeves), and Little Bo-Peep (Jill Schoelen). The plot revolves around the villainous Barnaby Barnacle (Richard Mulligan), who attempts to sabotage Toyland by causing mischief and attempting to marry Mary Quite Contrary against her will.
Lisa, along with her siblings and friends, must help the residents of Toyland defeat Barnaby and restore peace. The film features original songs and adaptations of tunes from the original operetta. The production design is brightly colored and fantastical, aiming to create a whimsical atmosphere suitable for children. Though intended for a younger audience, the film includes comedic elements and some darker moments, mainly driven by the actions of Barnaby.
