Jósef Kamiński (Polish colonel)

Józef Kamiński (1899-1944) was a Polish colonel of the Polish Army and the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) during World War II. He was a key figure in the Polish resistance movement in the Warsaw region. Kamiński, using the pseudonyms "Zenon," "Tatar," and "Ojciec Jan," commanded the AK Podokręg Północny (Northern District) "Żoliborz" in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

Prior to the war, Kamiński was a career officer in the Polish Army. Following the German invasion of Poland in 1939, he became actively involved in the underground resistance. He organized and led sabotage and diversionary operations against the occupying forces.

During the Warsaw Uprising, Kamiński's forces were heavily engaged in fighting in the Żoliborz district, which became a stronghold of the resistance. Despite facing overwhelming German firepower, Kamiński and his troops fought bravely and managed to hold out for a significant period.

After the surrender of the Warsaw Uprising, Kamiński was captured by the Germans. He was imprisoned and later executed. He is remembered as a hero of the Polish resistance and a symbol of Polish defiance against Nazi occupation. His leadership and courage during the Warsaw Uprising are widely recognized.
