Iohannes (consul 456)

Iohannes was a Roman aristocrat who served as consul in 456 AD. Little is known about his life beyond this single office. He was appointed Western Roman consul alongside Flavius Avitus, who was also serving as emperor at the time. The appointment of consuls during this period of the Western Roman Empire often reflected the political maneuvering and power struggles among various factions. Iohannes's consulship, therefore, provides a limited glimpse into the political landscape of the declining Western Empire in the mid-5th century. The fast-changing conditions saw emperors rise and fall in short periods, with generals and powerful figures within the army wielding substantial influence over the state. Further details about Iohannes are scarce in extant historical sources.
