Idlewild (band)
Idlewild are a Scottish rock band formed in Edinburgh in December 1995. The band's name comes from a location in the novel Anne of Green Gables.
Initially known for their frenetic, post-hardcore influenced sound, particularly evident on their early EPs and first two albums, Idlewild gradually incorporated more alternative rock and folk influences into their music. This stylistic shift became more prominent with the release of The Remote Part (2002), which brought them mainstream success.
The band's core lineup consisted of Roddy Woomble (vocals), Rod Jones (guitar), and Colin Newton (drums). Over the years, the lineup has seen changes, with various bassists and guitarists joining and leaving. Gareth Russell (bass) was a long-term member before his departure, and Allan Stewart (guitar) also contributed significantly to the band's sound during his tenure.
Idlewild released several studio albums, including Captain (1998), Hope Is Important (1998), 100 Broken Windows (2000), The Remote Part (2002), Warnings/Promises (2005), Make Another World (2007), Post Electric Blues (2009), and Everything Ever Written (2015).
After a period of inactivity, Idlewild reunited and continued to tour and record music, maintaining a dedicated fanbase. They are considered an influential band within the Scottish music scene and beyond, known for their energetic live performances and Roddy Woomble's distinctive lyrics and stage presence.
