Ian Strange (Australian artist)
Ian Strange (born 1982) is an Australian contemporary artist best known for his large-scale, site-specific interventions and photographic works that explore themes of home, architecture, social isolation, and the suburban experience. He works primarily in photography, film, sculpture, and installation.
Strange's practice often involves painting and altering domestic buildings in suburban landscapes before documenting the transformations through photography and film. These interventions are temporary, and the resulting images and films serve as the lasting record of the project.
His best-known projects include:
- Suburban: A series of eight interventions on foreclosed homes in Ohio, Detroit, Alabama, and New Jersey (2011-2013).
- LANDSCAPE N.1 (2013): An intervention in Christchurch, New Zealand, in response to the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.
- SHADOW (2015): A collaborative project with Cleveland residents that utilized projections onto homes.
- ISLAND (2015-2016): A series of installations and photographs focusing on isolation.
- FINAL ACT (2019): A project exploring themes of climate anxiety and ecological crisis, staged in the Austrian Alps.
Strange's work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. He frequently collaborates with communities affected by the socio-economic forces explored in his art. His practice aims to prompt reflection on the changing nature of home and belonging in the contemporary world.
