Hyperion (Greek myth)

Hyperion, in Greek mythology, was one of the twelve Titan children of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Heaven). He is often described as the Titan of light, observation, and wisdom. His name literally means "he who goes before" or "he who watches from above."

Hyperion is primarily known as the father of Helios (the Sun), Selene (the Moon), and Eos (the Dawn) with his sister, Theia. While Helios eventually became more prominently associated with the Sun, Hyperion at one point held this association. He represents the celestial light itself, or the source of light, as opposed to the specific celestial bodies.

During the Titanomachy, the ten-year war between the Titans and the Olympian gods, Hyperion fought alongside his fellow Titans. After the Olympians emerged victorious, Hyperion, along with many other Titans, was imprisoned in Tartarus.

Though not as central to many myths as other Titans like Cronus or Oceanus, Hyperion remains an important figure within the broader Titan family and the primordial aspects of the cosmos. He is a symbol of the ancient order that preceded the Olympian gods and the light that fills the heavens. His role as the father of Helios is his most enduring legacy.
