Henry Wood (scholar)

Henry Wood (1849-1925) was an American professor of German language and literature. Born in Maine, he graduated from Bowdoin College in 1869 and subsequently studied at the University of Göttingen, where he received his doctorate in 1879. He joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University in 1879 and remained there for the rest of his academic career, eventually becoming Professor Emeritus of German.

Wood was a respected scholar known for his meticulous research and clear writing style. He published extensively on a variety of topics within German literature, including studies of Goethe, Schiller, and Lessing. He was particularly interested in the historical context of literary works and often examined the social and political influences that shaped their creation.

His major publications include editions of German classics with detailed introductions and notes, as well as scholarly articles published in leading academic journals. He was a member of several learned societies and contributed significantly to the development of German studies in the United States.
