Henry Newton (footballer)
Henry Newton (born 21 January 1944) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder.
Newton began his career with Nottingham Forest, joining them as an apprentice in 1960. He progressed through the ranks and made his first-team debut in 1962. He quickly established himself as a key player, known for his tireless work rate, strong tackling, and accurate passing. He was a mainstay in the Forest midfield for several years, helping them to FA Cup success in 1959 (though this was prior to Newton's arrival) and maintaining their position in the top flight.
In 1969, Newton transferred to Everton for a reported fee of £80,000. He continued to be a valuable player, contributing to their League Championship win in the 1969-70 season. His consistent performances and commitment made him a popular figure with the Everton fans.
Newton left Everton in 1973 and joined Walsall. He spent two seasons with Walsall before moving into non-league football. He also had a spell as player-manager at Tamworth.
After retiring from playing, Newton remained involved in football, working as a coach and scout for various clubs. He is remembered as a dedicated and skillful midfielder who enjoyed a successful career at the highest level of English football.
