HMS Carysfort (1766)

HMS Carysfort was a 28-gun sixth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy, launched in 1766. She was built at Sheerness Dockyard to a design by Sir Thomas Slade, and her class was sometimes referred to as the Alarm-class or the Alarm group.

Carysfort saw service in a variety of roles during her career, primarily in patrolling and escort duties. Her early years were spent largely in peacetime deployments.

During the American Revolutionary War, Carysfort was actively involved in operations against the American colonies. She participated in several engagements and captured a number of enemy vessels. She notably captured the Continental Navy brig Andrew Doria in 1776.

Following the American Revolutionary War, Carysfort continued in service, seeing duty in various parts of the world. The specific details of her deployments and actions between the late 1780s and early 1800s are less well documented than her activities during the American Revolution.

Carysfort was eventually broken up in 1813. Her long service reflects the typical lifespan of a frigate of that era and her role in maintaining British naval power throughout a turbulent period of history.
