HMS Calder (K349)

HMS Calder (K349) was a Captain-class frigate of the Royal Navy during World War II. She was one of 78 ships of this class built in the United States and transferred to the Royal Navy under the terms of the Lend-Lease agreement. Named after Captain Home Riggs Popham, a British Royal Navy officer, Calder served primarily as a convoy escort in the Atlantic.

Her service primarily involved anti-submarine warfare and protection of merchant shipping against U-boat attacks. Calder was involved in several notable engagements with German U-boats.

She is noted for her participation in the sinking of U-74 in May 1942. She was involved in several other convoy battles and contributed significantly to Allied efforts to keep the Atlantic sea lanes open.

After the war, Calder was returned to the United States Navy in 1946. She was subsequently scrapped. The Captain-class frigates provided vital support to the Royal Navy during the Battle of the Atlantic and were instrumental in securing Allied victory.
