HMS Amethyst (1873)
HMS Amethyst was a Topaze-class corvette of the Royal Navy launched in 1873. She was constructed of iron and wood composite at Devonport Dockyard. The Topaze-class corvettes were designed as fast, ocean-going cruisers suitable for trade protection and general patrol duties.
Amethyst displaced 2,270 tons and measured 210 feet (64 m) in length, with a beam of 36 feet (11 m). She was powered by a two-cylinder horizontal compound steam engine producing 1,480 indicated horsepower (1,100 kW), driving a single screw propeller. She also carried a full sailing rig. Her maximum speed under steam was around 13 knots.
The armament of Amethyst typically consisted of several 64-pounder rifled muzzle-loading (RML) guns and smaller weapons. These were intended to provide sufficient firepower for engaging enemy vessels and protecting British interests in various parts of the world.
Amethyst served in various overseas stations during her career, including deployments to the Pacific and South America. She participated in anti-piracy operations and showed the flag in support of British diplomatic efforts. She also undertook survey work in the Pacific.
The Amethyst was sold out of service in 1887.
