HMS Active (1911)

HMS Active was a Town-class light cruiser built for the Royal Navy shortly before the First World War. She was the lead ship of the Active sub-class, which was a slightly modified version of the earlier Birmingham sub-class.

Active was laid down by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company at Govan, Scotland, on 13 July 1910, launched on 14 March 1911, and completed in April 1912. Upon completion, she joined the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron of the Home Fleet.

During the First World War, Active saw extensive service. She was involved in the Battle of Heligoland Bight in August 1914, and later in the Dogger Bank action in January 1915. She also participated in patrols in the North Sea and was involved in anti-submarine operations.

In 1917, Active was transferred to the Mediterranean, where she served with the Aegean Squadron. She played a role in operations against the Ottoman Empire.

After the war, Active was placed in reserve. She was sold for scrap in 1920.
