Nicolae Ivan (bishop)
Nicolae Ivan (born March 22, 1855, in Săliște, Sibiu County, Principality of Transylvania, Austrian Empire; died February 2, 1936, in Cluj, Romania) was a Romanian Greek Catholic clergyman who served as the Bishop of Cluj-Gherla from 1922 until his death.
Life and Career:
Ivan studied theology at the seminary in Blaj and was ordained a priest in 1881. He served in various parishes before becoming a professor at the Theological Academy in Blaj. In 1922, following the Union of Transylvania with Romania, he was appointed Bishop of Cluj-Gherla by Pope Pius XI, succeeding Vasile Hossu. He was consecrated as bishop on October 22, 1922.
As bishop, Ivan focused on strengthening the Romanian Greek Catholic Church in the newly expanded territory of Romania. He dedicated himself to promoting religious education, supporting charitable works, and constructing and renovating churches. He was also involved in social and cultural activities within the Romanian community.
Nicolae Ivan is remembered as a dedicated and respected leader within the Romanian Greek Catholic Church. He died in Cluj in 1936 and is buried in the Hajongard Cemetery.
