Gundemar

Gundemar (died 612) was a Visigothic King of Hispania, ruling from 610 to 612.

Gundemar succeeded Witteric, whose assassination he may have orchestrated. His reign was marked by continued conflict with the Basque tribes and a tense relationship with the Frankish kingdoms. Sources indicate he conducted military campaigns against the Basques, though their success is debated.

A council of the Visigothic church was convened in Toledo during Gundemar's reign in 610. This council addressed matters of ecclesiastical discipline and administration within the Visigothic kingdom.

Gundemar is credited with attempting to establish Toledo as the permanent ecclesiastical capital of the Visigothic kingdom, a move aimed at consolidating royal power and diminishing the influence of other religious centers. He died a natural death in Toledo in 612 and was succeeded by Sisebut.
