Green Party (Norway)
The Green Party (Norwegian: Miljøpartiet De Grønne, literally "The Environmental Party The Greens"), often abbreviated MDG, is a green political party in Norway. It was founded in 1988.
MDG's core ideology is based on environmentalism and sustainable development. They advocate for policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting biodiversity, and promoting renewable energy. Beyond environmental issues, the party also supports social justice, animal welfare, and international cooperation.
The party is considered part of the global green political movement. While initially struggling to gain significant electoral traction, MDG has gradually increased its representation in local and national politics over the years. They have achieved representation in the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) since 2013. Their political influence often involves coalition-building and negotiations with other parties to advance their environmental agenda.
Unlike some other green parties, MDG in Norway often presents itself as a pragmatic and solution-oriented force, willing to work across the political spectrum to achieve tangible environmental improvements. Their political platform includes proposals for phasing out oil exploration, investing in public transport, and implementing stricter environmental regulations.
