Great American Scream Machine (Six Flags Over Georgia)
The Great American Scream Machine was a wooden roller coaster located at Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell, Georgia. Opened in 1973, it was a prominent feature of the park for over thirty years before its closure in 2005. Designed by John C. Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the Great American Scream Machine was known for its classic out-and-back layout, high speeds, and significant airtime. The ride featured a first drop of 105 feet and reached speeds of approximately 57 miles per hour. It quickly became a beloved and iconic ride within the park's history and a recognizable landmark. The coaster's closure was attributed to factors including declining ridership, increased maintenance costs, and the park's desire to introduce newer, more technologically advanced attractions. The land previously occupied by the Great American Scream Machine is now home to other rides within the park.
