Gordon Davidson (director)
Gordon Davidson (1933 – 2016) was an American theatre director and producer, best known as the founding artistic director of the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, California. He held that position from its opening in 1967 until 2005.
Davidson was a significant figure in American theatre, championing new works and diverse voices. He fostered the development of many important plays, including the original Broadway productions of Zoot Suit (which he also directed), Children of a Lesser God (for which he won the Tony Award for Best Director), and The Shadow Box (which he also directed).
Under his leadership, the Mark Taper Forum became a leading regional theatre, renowned for its commitment to socially relevant and challenging productions. He oversaw numerous premieres and revivals, and his directorial style was often characterized by its attention to detail and its ability to elicit powerful performances from actors.
