Gnaeus Servilius Caepio (consul 203 BC)

Gnaeus Servilius Caepio was a Roman politician and general who served as consul in 203 BC during the Second Punic War.

Little is known about his early career. He was likely from a patrician family, the Servilii Caepiones, a branch of the larger Servilia gens.

In 203 BC, he was elected consul alongside Gaius Servilius Geminus. His primary task during his consulship was to continue the war against Hannibal, who was still in Italy. However, the other consul, Gaius Servilius Geminus, was assigned the province of Bruttium (modern Calabria) where Hannibal was located. Gnaeus Servilius Caepio remained in Italy, probably to oversee the raising of troops and the maintenance of supply lines. Livy mentions that a supplication was decreed in his name and that of his colleague.

After his consulship, further details of his life are sparse. There are no records of him holding any further major office. His descendants continued to be prominent in Roman politics, with later members of the Servilii Caepiones family achieving significant positions, including consulships and other important magistracies.
