Alecto (SPG)

Alecto was a self-propelled gun (SPG) developed by Vickers-Armstrongs in the United Kingdom during the Second World War. It was designed as a light and versatile vehicle capable of fulfilling several roles, including infantry support and reconnaissance. The Alecto was based on the chassis of the Tetrarch light tank, modifying its superstructure to mount a larger gun.

Several variants of the Alecto were proposed and developed. The most common armament was a 95mm howitzer, intended for close support. This version was designed to provide direct fire support for infantry, engaging fortified positions and enemy concentrations. Other proposed armaments included a 25-pounder gun-howitzer and a QF 6-pounder anti-tank gun, reflecting the evolving tactical needs of the British Army.

The Alecto featured an open-topped fighting compartment, offering good situational awareness for the crew but leaving them vulnerable to enemy fire and grenades. Its light weight and low ground pressure gave it good mobility, allowing it to operate in terrain unsuitable for heavier vehicles. However, its thin armor made it susceptible to a wide range of enemy weapons.

Although several Alecto vehicles were produced, they saw limited operational service during the war. The 95mm howitzer variant, known as the Alecto Mk IV, was used in small numbers in the Far East during the later stages of the conflict. Its mobility and firepower were valued in the difficult terrain of Burma. Post-war, the Alecto was considered obsolete and was quickly withdrawn from service.
