Gilbert McMicking (Canadian politician)

Gilbert McMicking (1833-1915) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He served as a Member of Parliament for Provencher from 1871 to 1872, and for Marquette from 1872 to 1874. He was a prominent figure in the Red River Colony prior to Manitoba's entry into Confederation and played a significant role in facilitating communication and trade within the region and with eastern Canada.

Born in Stamford Township, Upper Canada (now Ontario), McMicking moved west and engaged in various enterprises, including telegraph construction and operation. He held important positions such as Dominion Lands Agent in Winnipeg and was heavily involved in the negotiations leading up to Manitoba becoming a province in 1870. His business interests centered around telegraphy, land speculation, and transportation. McMicking was known for his entrepreneurial spirit and his efforts to promote western development.

After his time in Parliament, he continued his business activities and remained a notable figure in Manitoba's early development.
