George Selwyn (bishop of Tinnevelly)

George Augustus Selwyn (1809 – 1878) was the first Bishop of New Zealand and later the Bishop of Lichfield. While not directly associated with Tinnevelly in the same way his father, William Selwyn, was involved in missionary work in the area, his time in New Zealand resulted in significant indirect impact on the understanding and outreach to various communities, including those with connections to India.

He is primarily known for his missionary work in New Zealand, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the Anglican Church. His work focused on the Māori people, demonstrating a commitment to understanding and engaging with indigenous cultures. Though his approach might be viewed differently through a modern lens, his dedication to spreading Christianity in a new colony significantly shaped religious life in the region. His experience in New Zealand provided a model, however imperfect, for approaches to mission in various other colonies, some of which may have had indirect links to individuals or communities with origins in or connections to Tinnevelly.

His later appointment as Bishop of Lichfield was a significant role within the Church of England, influencing theological and ecclesiastical developments within England and potentially through networks impacting other mission fields. It's important to note that direct involvement in Tinnevelly itself is not readily apparent in biographical accounts. Any connection would be highly indirect and based on broader trends in missionary work and the expansion of the Anglican Church during this period. Further research may reveal more specific links, but at present the evidence remains scant.
