George Main (horse racing)
The George Main Stakes is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. It is run over a distance of 1600 metres under set weights and penalty conditions. The race is named in honour of George Main, a prominent racing administrator in New South Wales. It traditionally takes place in September as part of the Sydney Spring Carnival. The George Main Stakes is a significant lead-up race to other major spring events, including the Epsom Handicap and the Cox Plate. Horses that perform well in the George Main Stakes often go on to compete in these and other prestigious races. It attracts high-quality fields consisting of both local and international contenders.
