Genesis (Genesis album)

Genesis is the twelfth studio album by the English rock band Genesis, released in March 1983 on Charisma Records in the UK and by Atlantic Records in North America. Often referred to as "Mama" after its lead single, it represents a significant stylistic shift for the band, incorporating elements of new wave, art rock, and pop.

The album was largely written and recorded at The Farm, Genesis' own studio in Surrey, England. It was co-produced by the band and Hugh Padgham, who had previously worked with Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins on their respective solo albums.

Genesis features a darker and more atmospheric sound than their previous work. Lyrically, the album explores themes of alienation, societal issues, and personal struggles. The album spawned several singles including "Mama," which became one of their most recognizable songs, and "That's All," a more accessible pop track. Other notable tracks include "Home by the Sea" and "Second Home by the Sea," a two-part song showcasing the band's progressive rock roots, albeit in a more concise form.

Genesis was a commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and number nine in the US. It was supported by a lengthy world tour, solidifying Genesis's status as a major stadium act. The album's success is often attributed to its combination of experimental elements and accessible pop sensibilities, making it a pivotal release in the band's discography.
