Gavin Dunbar (archbishop of Glasgow)

Gavin Dunbar (c. 1454 – 1532) was a Scottish churchman and politician who served as Archbishop of Glasgow from 1524 until his death. He was also Lord Chancellor of Scotland during the reign of King James V.

Dunbar was born into a prominent family, a member of the Dunbar family of Mochrum. He studied at the University of St Andrews, obtaining a Master of Arts degree. He then entered the service of the church, holding several positions including Dean of Moray before being appointed Archbishop of Glasgow in 1524.

As Archbishop, Dunbar oversaw significant building works at Glasgow Cathedral and was involved in the governance of the city. He also played an active role in national politics. His appointment as Lord Chancellor demonstrated his influence and involvement in the administration of Scotland. He was a staunch supporter of King James V and worked to consolidate royal authority.

Dunbar's time as Archbishop coincided with a period of religious and political tension, with the rise of Protestantism beginning to challenge the established Catholic Church. While he staunchly defended the Catholic faith, he also recognized the need for reform within the Church. He died in 1532 and was succeeded as Archbishop by his nephew, William Dunbar. Gavin Dunbar's legacy is one of a powerful and influential figure who played a significant role in the religious and political life of Scotland during the early 16th century.
