Taza (Chiricahua leader)

Taza (c. 1840s – 1876) was a chief of the Chiricahua Apache. He was the eldest son of Cochise and succeeded him as chief upon Cochise's death in 1874. Unlike his father, Taza favored diplomacy and peace with the United States government.

Taza traveled to Washington, D.C. in 1876 as part of an Apache delegation. He spoke with government officials and expressed his commitment to maintaining peaceful relations. He also toured the eastern United States, giving audiences a glimpse into Apache culture and life.

Tragically, Taza died in Washington, D.C. shortly after his visit, reportedly from pneumonia, though some Apache suspected poisoning. His death significantly weakened the peace efforts between the Chiricahua and the United States. Following Taza's death, his brother Naiche became chief, but the relatively brief period of peace initiated by Taza's diplomatic efforts quickly unraveled, leading to further conflict. Taza is remembered for his attempt to navigate a peaceful path for his people in a time of immense pressure and change. His vision differed significantly from that of Geronimo, who would later lead the resistance against U.S. forces.
