Frau Hitt

Frau Hitt is a prominent rock formation located in the Nordkette mountain range above Innsbruck, Austria. It resembles a woman sitting with a child, and is the subject of local legends.

According to legend, Frau Hitt was a giant woman who was once a wealthy and stingy noblewoman. During a time of famine, she refused to share her bread with the poor, instead turning it into stone. As punishment for her greed and lack of compassion, she and her apron-clad child were themselves turned into stone, becoming the rock formation visible today. Different versions of the legend attribute various sins to her, all related to greed and selfishness.

The Frau Hitt rock formation is a popular landmark and tourist attraction. It is easily visible from Innsbruck and the surrounding areas, and is a common subject for photographs. It can be reached by hiking trails from the Nordkette cable car stations.

The Frau Hitt saddle (Frau Hitt-Sattel) is a mountain pass situated near the rock formation, also named after the legend.
