Fiat X1/9
The Fiat X1/9 is a two-seater mid-engined sports car designed by Bertone and manufactured by Fiat from 1972 to 1982 and subsequently by Bertone from 1982 to 1989. Conceived as a replacement for the Fiat 850 Spider, the X1/9 was notable for its wedge-shaped design, pop-up headlights, and targa top, features relatively uncommon for affordable sports cars of its era.
The car used a transverse mid-engine layout derived from the Fiat 128, providing improved handling and balance compared to front-engined, rear-wheel-drive alternatives. The X1/9 was initially powered by a 1.3-liter engine, later upgraded to a 1.5-liter engine in 1979.
Production was initially handled by Fiat, but after 1982, Bertone assumed full manufacturing responsibility, marketing the car under the Bertone name. Despite the change in branding, the car remained mechanically similar to its Fiat-badged predecessor. The X1/9 enjoyed a relatively long production run and became a popular choice for enthusiasts seeking an affordable and stylish mid-engined sports car. It is recognized for its distinctive styling and nimble handling.
