Farewell, My Lovely (1975 film)

Farewell, My Lovely is a 1975 American neo-noir crime thriller film directed by Dick Richards and starring Robert Mitchum as private detective Philip Marlowe. It is the second film adaptation of Raymond Chandler's 1940 novel of the same name.

The film follows Marlowe as he is hired by Moose Malloy, a recently released convict, to find his former girlfriend, Velma Valento. Marlowe's search leads him into a complex web of corruption, blackmail, murder, and deceit involving wealthy socialites, crooked cops, and dangerous criminals. Charlotte Rampling, John Ireland, Sylvia Miles, and Anthony Zerbe co-star.

The film is known for its atmospheric cinematography, period detail (set in 1941 Los Angeles), and Mitchum's portrayal of a world-weary and cynical Philip Marlowe. It adheres more closely to the plot of Chandler's novel than the earlier 1944 adaptation, Murder, My Sweet. While Farewell, My Lovely received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics finding it too slow-paced or lacking in suspense, it has since gained a reputation as a solid neo-noir adaptation and a significant entry in Robert Mitchum's filmography. Sylvia Miles received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. The film showcases a dark and morally ambiguous world characteristic of both film noir and the Chandler novels it adapts.
