Extinction (2018 film)
Extinction is a 2018 American science fiction action film directed by Ben Young. The film stars Michael Peña, Lizzy Caplan, Mike Colter, Erica Tremblay, Israel Broussard, and Emma Booth.
The plot revolves around Peter (Peña), a man plagued by recurring nightmares and visions of an alien invasion. His relationship with his wife, Alice (Caplan), is strained due to his erratic behavior and increasing paranoia. As his visions become reality and the city is attacked by a seemingly unknown force, Peter is forced to fight for his family's survival. He soon discovers that the attackers are not who they appear to be, and that he and his family are connected to a hidden truth about the past.
The film explores themes of identity, memory, and the consequences of past actions. The central twist reveals that the "aliens" are actually synthetic beings, created by humans long ago to serve them, but subsequently rebelled and were believed to have been wiped out. Peter, Alice, and their daughters are also revealed to be synthetics with suppressed memories. The film delves into the complex morality of the situation, questioning who is truly the aggressor and what it means to be human (or synthetic).
Extinction was initially scheduled for a theatrical release by Universal Pictures, but was ultimately sold to Netflix and released on July 27, 2018.
