Ethylene bis(stearamide)

Ethylene bis(stearamide) (EBS) is a synthetic wax derived from stearic acid and ethylenediamine. It is a hard, high-melting point, non-ionic compound characterized by its excellent internal and external lubricating properties. EBS is typically supplied as a fine, white powder or flakes.

EBS functions as a processing aid in a wide range of plastics and elastomers, including PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, ABS, nylon, and thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). It is used as a lubricant, mold release agent, and anti-blocking agent.

Properties:

  • High melting point (typically between 140-148°C)
  • Insoluble in water
  • Soluble in some organic solvents at elevated temperatures
  • Excellent lubricity
  • Good thermal stability
  • Non-toxic and chemically inert

Applications:

  • Plastics processing: Used as an internal and external lubricant to reduce friction and improve processing characteristics during extrusion, injection molding, and calendaring. Facilitates mold release and enhances surface finish.
  • Rubber processing: Acts as a mold release agent and lubricant in rubber compounds.
  • Coatings: Used as a slip agent and anti-blocking agent in coatings and inks.
  • Adhesives: Enhances the slip and release properties of adhesives.
  • Textiles: Used as a lubricant and softening agent in textile processing.
  • Paper: Improves the slip properties of paper and paperboard.

Safety and Handling:

Ethylene bis(stearamide) is generally considered to be non-toxic and safe to handle. However, as with any fine powder, dust inhalation should be avoided. Safety data sheets (SDS) should be consulted for specific handling and safety precautions.
