Erviopsis

Erviopsis is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). Specifically, it is classified within the tribe Fabeae. These plants are characterized as annual herbs and are native to regions within the Mediterranean area and Southwest Asia. They are closely related to other genera in the Fabeae tribe, such as Vicia (vetches) and Lathyrus (pea vines).

Erviopsis species typically exhibit pinnately compound leaves, meaning the leaves are divided into multiple leaflets arranged along a central axis. Their flowers are papilionaceous, the characteristic butterfly-shaped flower structure common to many legumes. These flowers are usually small and can range in color from white to pale purple. The fruits are legumes (pods) containing several seeds.

The genus name Erviopsis is derived from Ervum, an older name applied to some members of the Vicia genus (lentils), combined with "-opsis," meaning "resembling." Thus, the name suggests a resemblance to plants formerly classified under Ervum.

Currently, there are a limited number of accepted species within the Erviopsis genus. Taxonomic classifications within the Fabeae tribe can be complex, and ongoing research may lead to revisions in the future. The plants within this genus are often found in disturbed habitats, such as fields and roadsides. They are not generally considered to be economically important crops, unlike their close relatives, lentils and field peas.
