Córdoba (wetland)

Córdoba is a province located in the geographical center of Argentina. While primarily known for its rolling hills, agriculture, and historical cities like Córdoba (the provincial capital), the province also contains significant wetland areas, particularly in the Mar Chiquita Lagoon region. These wetlands are of ecological importance, providing habitat for a variety of bird species, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

The Mar Chiquita Lagoon, also known as Mar de Ansenuza, is South America's largest saline lake and a critical component of the Córdoba wetlands. Its fluctuating water levels and high salinity create a unique environment that supports specialized flora and fauna adapted to these conditions. The surrounding marshes, grasslands, and forests contribute to a diverse ecosystem.

The wetlands of Córdoba face challenges from agricultural expansion, climate change, and pollution. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these valuable ecosystems, recognizing their role in biodiversity, water regulation, and carbon sequestration. These efforts involve both government agencies and non-governmental organizations. The Mar Chiquita National Park was established in 2018 to further protect a significant portion of the wetland area.
