Ernest Davis (brewer)
Ernest Davis (1872-1962) was a prominent New Zealand businessman and philanthropist, most notably known for his long association with Hancock & Co., a major brewing company in Auckland. Born in Nelson, New Zealand, Davis joined Hancock & Co. in 1897 and rose through the ranks, becoming chairman in 1930, a position he held until his death.
Under Davis's leadership, Hancock & Co. expanded its operations and consolidated its position in the New Zealand brewing industry. He was a key figure in the merger of Hancock & Co. with Lion Breweries in 1961, creating Lion Breweries Ltd, now Lion Nathan, one of the largest brewing companies in the region.
Beyond his business achievements, Davis was a significant contributor to the Auckland community. He served as Mayor of Auckland City from 1935 to 1941, during the challenging period of the Great Depression and the early years of World War II. His mayoral tenure was marked by a focus on public works projects aimed at alleviating unemployment and improving the city's infrastructure.
Davis was a generous philanthropist, donating extensively to various causes, including hospitals, educational institutions, and charitable organizations. He was particularly interested in supporting the development of Auckland Domain, a large public park. His contributions earned him widespread respect and recognition within the community. Davis was knighted in 1920 for his services to the community and made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1953. He died in Auckland in 1962, leaving a legacy as a successful businessman, dedicated civic leader, and impactful philanthropist.
