Erg Chebbi

Erg Chebbi is one of Morocco's two major Saharan ergs, large seas of dunes formed by wind-blown sand. The other notable erg is Erg Chigaga. Erg Chebbi is located near the town of Merzouga, close to the Algerian border. It is a popular tourist destination known for its dramatic orange-colored sand dunes, which can reach heights of up to 150 meters.

The erg is approximately 22 kilometers (14 miles) long and 5 kilometers (3 miles) wide. It is characterized by a diverse landscape of dunes, ranging from small, easily climbable dunes to massive, towering formations. The sand itself is exceptionally fine and soft.

Activities in Erg Chebbi include camel trekking, quad biking, sandboarding, and desert camping. Many visitors come to experience the sunrise and sunset over the dunes, which are considered particularly beautiful. The area is also home to a variety of desert flora and fauna, though they are adapted to the harsh environment.

The local Berber population plays a significant role in the tourism industry, offering guided tours, accommodation, and cultural experiences. The proximity of Merzouga provides access to essential services and infrastructure for visitors. Erg Chebbi is an important part of the Moroccan Sahara, drawing tourists and contributing to the local economy.
