Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett (politician)

Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett (3 July 1849 – 5 March 1902) was a British Conservative politician and barrister. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Eye from 1880 to 1885, and for Ecclesall from 1885 until his death in 1902.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Ellis Bartlett and his wife, Sophia Ashmead. He was educated at Torquay Proprietary School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with a BA degree. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1877.

Ashmead-Bartlett entered Parliament in 1880, representing Eye as a Conservative. He actively promoted the interests of his constituency and generally supported Conservative policies. In 1885, the Eye constituency was abolished, and Ashmead-Bartlett successfully contested the Ecclesall division of Sheffield, a seat he held until his death.

In Parliament, Ashmead-Bartlett was known for his staunch defence of the British Empire and his vocal opposition to Irish Home Rule. He was a strong advocate for maintaining a powerful Royal Navy. He also took a keen interest in foreign affairs, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Empire.

Ashmead-Bartlett died at his home in Mayfair, London, in March 1902. He was unmarried.
