Egg (chair)
An Egg chair is a chair designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the Radisson Collection Hotel, Royal Copenhagen. It is characterized by its distinctive ovoid shape, which resembles a broken egg. The chair is considered a classic of Danish design and a prime example of mid-century modern furniture.
The Egg chair is constructed from a molded fiberglass shell covered in fabric or leather. The shell is mounted on a swivel base, allowing the user to rotate 360 degrees. The high back and sides of the chair provide a sense of privacy and enclosure.
Jacobsen designed the Egg chair to complement the architectural style of the Radisson Collection Hotel, Royal Copenhagen. He sought to create a chair that was both comfortable and visually striking, and that would contribute to the hotel's overall aesthetic.
The Egg chair has become a popular design icon and is widely recognized for its unique form and functionality. It is frequently used in residential and commercial settings, and is often featured in design publications and exhibitions. Its continued appeal lies in its sculptural form, comfort, and its enduring association with high-quality design.
