Efficiency Medal (South Africa)

The Efficiency Medal (South Africa) was a military medal awarded to members of the South African Defence Force (SADF) for long and efficient service. Instituted in 1952, it recognized diligent service by non-commissioned officers and other ranks.

Eligibility required a minimum period of 18 years of efficient service in the Permanent Force of the SADF. Time served in certain reserve forces could also contribute towards the qualifying period, but specific regulations applied. Good conduct and overall efficiency were also prerequisites for the award.

The medal's design typically featured the coat of arms of South Africa at the time of its issue. Different versions of the medal existed, reflecting changes in the South African coat of arms over the years, corresponding with significant political and societal shifts within the country.

The Efficiency Medal (South Africa) was superseded following the establishment of the new South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in 1994 and the introduction of a new system of honors and awards.
