Duchess (film)
The Duchess is a 2008 British historical drama film directed by Saul Dibb. It is based on Amanda Foreman's biography, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. The film stars Keira Knightley as Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, and Ralph Fiennes as her husband, William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire.
The film depicts the life of Georgiana Cavendish, a celebrated socialite, political activist, and fashion icon in late 18th-century England. It focuses on her unhappy marriage to the Duke, his infidelity, and her own complex relationships, including her affair with Charles Grey (later Earl Grey), played by Dominic Cooper, and her acceptance of the Duke's mistress, Bess Foster, played by Hayley Atwell, into their household.
The Duchess explores themes of societal expectations, female agency, the restrictions placed upon women in the Georgian era, and the pursuit of love and happiness within the confines of an arranged marriage. The film's costumes and set design received considerable praise for their historical accuracy and visual appeal. The film was nominated for several awards, including Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction, and won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
