Drayangs
Drayangs are entertainment venues primarily found in Bhutan. These establishments typically feature female singers and dancers who perform Bhutanese and other popular songs and dances. Patrons can purchase alcoholic beverages and snacks, and are expected to offer tips (in the form of kusung – money offered with a bow) to the performers as a gesture of appreciation.
Drayangs have often been the subject of controversy within Bhutanese society due to concerns surrounding the working conditions of the performers, perceived links to prostitution (although prostitution is illegal in Bhutan), and their potential impact on traditional Bhutanese culture. The Bhutanese government has periodically attempted to regulate or close down Drayangs due to these concerns.
The venues attract a primarily male clientele, although women are not prohibited from attending. The atmosphere is generally lively and can be quite boisterous. Despite the controversies, Drayangs remain a popular form of entertainment in Bhutan, particularly in urban areas. Discussions surrounding the ethics and legality of Drayangs continue in Bhutanese public discourse.
