Charles Lindsay (bishop)

Charles Lindsay (1760-1846) was an Anglican clergyman and Bishop of Kildare from 1804 until his death.

Born on March 14, 1760, he was the youngest son of James Lindsay, 5th Earl of Balcarres, and Anne Dalrymple. He was educated at Eton College and Peterhouse, Cambridge, graduating in 1781.

He was ordained in 1783 and served as Rector of Wortham, Suffolk. He later became Archdeacon of Kildare in 1793 before being appointed Bishop of Kildare by patent on May 26, 1804. He was consecrated at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, on June 3, 1804.

As Bishop of Kildare, Lindsay was also Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. He served ex officio as a commissioner of the Commissioners of Education Inquiry. He was a wealthy man and resided at Glasnevin House.

He married Anne Taylor in 1788. They had several children, including Charles Lindsay, who became Archdeacon of Dublin.

Charles Lindsay died on August 7, 1846, at his residence in Dublin and was buried in Christ Church Cathedral. He was succeeded as Bishop of Kildare by Charles Dalrymple Lindsay, a relative.
