Dilīpa

Dilīpa was a prominent king belonging to the Ikshvaku dynasty in Hindu mythology. He is best known for his devotion to dharma (righteousness), his great sacrifices, and his benevolent rule. Two kings named Dilīpa are generally recognized in the lineage:

• Dilīpa I (Khatvanga Dilīpa): Mentioned briefly in some texts, this Dilīpa is less prominent than his descendant.

• Dilīpa II (Dirghabahu Dilīpa): This is the more well-known Dilīpa, described extensively in the Raghuvamsha of Kalidasa, as well as in various Puranas. He is considered an ideal king, exemplary in his performance of royal duties and known for his unwavering commitment to justice and the welfare of his subjects. He faced the challenge of being childless for a long period, leading him and his wife Sudakshina to seek the guidance of the sage Vashishta. Through the sage's instructions and a series of trials involving a divine cow, Nandini, they were eventually blessed with a son, Raghu, who continued the illustrious lineage. Dilīpa's story emphasizes the importance of duty, devotion, and perseverance in achieving one's goals. His reign is often cited as an example of ideal governance and a golden age.
