Dick Hughes (footballer)

Richard "Dick" Hughes (born October 10, 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL).

Hughes, a rover, was a key player in Melbourne's dominant era of the 1950s and 1960s. He debuted for Melbourne in 1958 and quickly established himself as a talented and versatile player. He was known for his pace, skill, and ability to win the ball in contested situations.

Hughes played in four Melbourne premiership teams: 1959, 1960, 1964, and 1964 (though he missed the 1960 Grand Final through injury). He was a consistent performer throughout his career and was highly regarded by his teammates and opponents.

He represented Victoria in interstate football matches on several occasions. Hughes retired from VFL football at the end of the 1967 season, having played 127 games for Melbourne and kicking 75 goals. After his playing career, Hughes remained involved in football as a commentator and administrator.
