Dendrite (adhesive)

Dendrite (adhesive) refers to a brand of synthetic resin adhesive, primarily based on nitrocellulose, that was commonly used in the past, particularly in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia) and other Eastern European countries. It was known for its strong bonding properties and was often used for various household and industrial applications, including gluing leather, rubber, wood, and other materials.

The adhesive gained notoriety due to its misuse as an inhalant drug. The solvents in Dendrite, such as toluene and xylene, have psychoactive effects when inhaled, leading to altered mental states and euphoria. This dangerous practice caused significant health problems, including neurological damage, organ failure, and even death, among vulnerable populations, particularly adolescents and those experiencing homelessness.

Because of its widespread misuse, the sale and distribution of Dendrite adhesive were often restricted or banned in many regions. Safer and less abusable alternatives, with reduced solvent content or different chemical compositions, have been developed and promoted to replace it. The legacy of Dendrite serves as a stark reminder of the potential for unintended consequences from readily available chemicals and the importance of public health measures to prevent substance abuse. The term "Dendrite" is now often associated with solvent abuse in the regions where it was prevalent.
