David Stephenson (photographer)
David Stephenson (born 1955) is an Australian-born photographer best known for his large-format architectural and landscape photographs, often focusing on minimalist aesthetics and sublime qualities. He frequently collaborates with his partner, Martine Corompt.
Stephenson's work often explores themes of time, scale, and the relationship between humanity and the environment. His architectural photographs often feature churches, cathedrals, and other significant historical structures, captured with precise detail and a sensitivity to the building's inherent geometry and light. His landscape work similarly emphasizes the grandeur and immensity of nature, frequently depicting glacial landscapes and other remote locations.
He has exhibited extensively internationally, and his photographs are held in numerous public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Stephenson has also published several books showcasing his work, often featuring essays that contextualize his photographic practice within art historical and philosophical frameworks.
Stephenson received his formal training in photography in the 1970s. He and Corompt have lived and worked in both Australia and Europe.
